IPVanish is an excellent zero-logs VPN for torrenting, Kodi and gaming. It is also incredibly fast, offers strong encryption and lots of privacy positives such as first-party DNS servers and a VPN kill switch.

US-based VPN provider IPVanish claims to be “The World’s Best VPN Service“, mentioning features like its 40,000+ shared IPs, 1,000+ P2P-friendly servers in 60+ countries, zero traffic logs, and live chat support available 24/7.

IPVanish goes further by calling themselves ‘the world’s only Top Tier VPN service provider’, which means the company owns and manages its own servers. That’s actually great, as it gives them more control over how the servers are set up and run, and demonstrates a level of resources and expertise which isn’t always available with other VPNs.

Techradar’s verdict: IPVanish is fast, with highly configurable app and excellent live chat support to help keep everything running smoothly. Issues with usability and the uncertain locations of a small number of servers are just enough to keep it off the top spot.

Do you really need a VPN?

Yes, you do! A virtual private network connection achieves two technical results:

  1. A VPN cloaks and encrypts your signal, making your online activity completely illegible to any eavesdroppers
  2. A VPN manipulates your IP address, making you appear to come from a different machine/location/country.

Most people are unaware of this, but that Starbucks hotspot and that 10-dollar-a-day hotel wi-fi are not safe for confidential email and browsing. Public wi-fi offers no encryption security to its users, and your signals are broadcast for anyone savvy enough to eavesdrop. It’s very easy for even a junior hacker to intercept your unencrypted wi-fi signal.

If you log into a public wi-fi network and then connect to a personal VPN, all of your hotspot web use will then be encrypted and hidden from prying eyes. If you are a traveler or a user who is regularly using public wireless, then a VPN is a very wise investment in privacy.

Another benefit is bypassing GEO protected restrictions. Geo-targeting is when your physical location is determined and then used by Internet marketers to serve up ads that are relevant to where you’re located. When you’re on the web without a VPN, online advertisers know information about you, such as: IP address, ISP, organization, zip code, state or region, city and country.

But when you use IPVanish (or any other VPN service), your real IP address becomes hidden behind an anonymous IP address, so online marketers, search engines and websites are all in the dark when it comes to your personal information. This allows you to avoid location identification, annoying ads, and unwanted marketing just by simply connecting to one of our secure servers.

Servers and server distribution

IPVanish boasts over 1,100 VPN servers spread across 60 countries. It’s an impressive list, including servers in Africa, Asia (including China), Central and South America, North America, Europe, India, and the Middle East. In terms of geographic diversity, only a few of the best services can boast a list of server locations of comparable size. Geographic diversity is especially important since it means you have lots of options for spoofing your location and have a better chance that there will be a nearby server for faster, more reliable connections when you travel abroad.

In terms of robustness, IPVanish’s 1,000 servers are impressive, placing it among the best VPNs (note that NordVPN offers over 3,400 servers). A large server count can be important, since more servers mean you’re less likely to be crammed into an overcrowded VPN server having to share too little bandwidth with too many people.

The 40,000-plus IP addresses on offer from IPVanish VPN is one of the highest numbers we’ve ever seen. What is even more important – IPVanish does not use virtual servers. This gives you another level of safety and security as many other VPN providers do effer virtual server connections.

IPVanish recently suspended operations in Russia, as local law conflicts with the company’s zero-log policy. IPVanish has maintained a server presence in Hong Kong, despite efforts by the Chinese government to crack down on VPNs in that country.

IPVanish protects your privacy with its use of rock-solid, industry-standard AES-256 encryption, and its support for the highly secure protocols, OpenVPN and IKEv2. There’s a kill switch to keep your identity protected should your connection drop, plus a host of other advanced features designed to put your right to private and secure browsing first (DNS protection and IPv6 leak protection to reduce the chance that your real identity will be exposed online). Just note that the mobile apps don’t have a kill switch, making them a little more vulnerable if the VPN drops unexpectedly.

IPVanish does not collect or log any traffic or use of its Virtual Private Network service and states it will never sell or rent personal information to others. This is something we like a lot.

Speed and performance

VPN services generally have some kind of impact on your web browsing. Usually, this means slower download speeds, slower upload speeds, and increased latency.

IPVanish has some of the fastest download speeds. It scored very well in all the tests, reducing download speeds only by less than 3 %. Uploads and latency are consistently among the best we’ve seen, making IPVanish a very smart choice for gamers and users of P2P software.

If you are near Toronto, San Francisco, Singapore, London or Paris and mainly need to connect locally then IPVanish is very hard to beat. Some of the more remote servers in less usual location might not perform that well at all times.
Overall, most locations performed very well, and IPVanish is definitely faster than most of their competitors.

Netflix, torrenting and bypassing censorship

The location-spoofing abilities of a VPN make it a popular choice for accessing region-locked streaming content. IPVanish has a very large network, and that generally means there’s a good chance it will allow you to access geo-blocked sites, such as Netflix.

With IPVanish we encountered limited streaming access – although Netflix was working, some other services were blocked. Netflix availability can change quickly as no VPN can guarantee Netflix access over the long term and we’ve seen many customer reviews on the app stores suggesting that the service didn’t work for them.

IPVanish VPN Netflix 2019 review

IPVanish has dedicated large amount of resources towards P2P traffic, and you can feel it. It’s the best VPN for torrenting at the moment, with incredibly fast downloads, furious uploads, and P2P traffic permitted on all servers. That’s great news for Kodi users, too.

User friendly interface but still some work to do

The service has a wide range of clients, covering Windows, Mac, Android, iOS, even Amazon Fire, as well as providing a host of setup guides for Linux, Chromebooks and other platforms. You can use up to 10 devices at once what is the highest number we’ve seen.

The app download links are easy to find on the website, and, conveniently, you don’t have to log in to your IPVanish account to access them. Installing their app was a pretty smooth and straightforward process, although we didn’t like you have to reboot your PC after installation.

IPVanish does things differently. Its clients can look more complex than the competition, but that’s mostly because they have more features and functionality than just about anyone else. This might confuse a novice user who is used to simple one-click interfaces.

A status panel displays the protocol, time connected, server name, and data uploaded and downloaded, a level of detail you’ll rarely see elsewhere. It even displays a real-time graph of your upload and download speeds. And you know the speeds are great so why not checking them from time to time 🙂

The server list is searchable, and that it can be filtered by available protocol, country, and latency time. There’s also a map view, but this isn’t the default one. Other services with more emphasis on user interface design put maps at the forefront.

To sum it up: The Windows client has a few small usability issues, but overall it performs very well, and experienced users in particular will appreciate its lengthy feature list.

IPVanish VPN - Surf the web without a trace. Fast!

IPVanish is an excellent zero-logs VPN for torrenting, Kodi and gaming. Not only it is super secure and puts heavy emphasis on keeping your stuff private, but it’s also incredibly fast. Download speeds are terrific in many popular server locations while upload speeds worldwide are best-in-class with low latency. The one trade-off is limited streaming access.
